Jamatia belongs to Scheduled tribe (ST) community of Tripura. They mainly lived in the District of Khowai Tripura, Gumoti Tripura, South Tripura. They speak the language of Kokborok which came from Tibeto-Burmese Origin. There were 74,949 Jamatia people as 2001 Census.
The Jamatias are Physically very strong and Courageous, muscular as whole.
Marriage
In Jamatia marriage there are many rules and regulation that we need to follow in every jamatias marriage and that is our Culture of Jamatia.
Before marriage Groom parents and Bride parents they meet and decide to fix a exact date for marriage and they will put during the good day of calendar between that date they can marriage.
Role before marriage :-
Firstly:- A bridegroom is a man who will soon be married. A bridegroom is attended by a best man and groomsmen. Boy parents need to go in girl house and meet her parents and then to fix a date of marriage after meeting together along them they carry a oldest person of the village and they start meeting and eat food (celebrate by happiness) in girl house and boy parent call girl parent in there house then they again girl parent they came to boy house and celebrate same as they did in girl house.
Secondly:- Boy parent being call by girl parent to drink (alcohol) minimum 5-7 bottle they need to give and its a fact and every Jamatias they follow there culture as same and after that again boy parent call then and celebrate the same as they did in girl house then they fix the date of marriage during that day .
Thirtly:-After fixing date of marriage , in groom house all the married person they came and gather to put a manager of marriage who will look after till marriage.4 Person they select among the group (2 bandari and 2 pushni and 2 Randhinijwk) which means the head of marriage Bandari will set up the all thing till the marriage is over and Pushni means they have a duty to call the people from the village during marriage for lunch or for work early in the morning. Randhinijwk (girl) means she need to prepare everything for a bride and she need to set every thing to a bride and also she need to do every work for a bride.
Fourth:- Groom parents ,friends, family, relatives, neighbour etc . they went bride house or village to bring out the beautiful bride for marriage and they will be back after bringing her .
Fifth:-Before bride enter in the groom house they need to stop in front of gate and they need to give a money for gate pass to a person who are waiting for a bride in front of gate until she gives they will not get permission to enter the gate.
Sixth:- Again the elder people of village they will select a 4 basemen (2young boy and 2 young girl) and there work is to get a holy water from river and by 3 times they need to full a pot and pour into groom and bride.
Seventh:-After taking bath they need to change a dress which was given by a both family and and there dress will be a traditional dress while getting married. Boy dress will be Doti and pajama, and bride dress will be pasra which will be jamatia traditional dress.
